The South Mountain YMCA has long been viewed as a leader in the communities of South Orange and Maplewood and beyond. The YMCA has served in numerous capacities in the community in its continuing effort to build a stronger community.
The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance are teamed up to create the Healthy U program. Healthy U is New Jersey’s first statewide, after-school initiative addressing childhood obesity. Healthy U is based on the Coordinated Approach to Child Health, or CATCH, a curriculum developed by the University of Texas Science Center School of Public Health. South Mountain YMCA is proud to be one of the first YMCA’s in the state to initiate CATCH by implementing CATCH programs in both Seth Boyden and Jefferson Elementary Schools.
The South Mountain YMCA is also involved in several community organizations such as the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce, the South Orange Rotary, the Maplewood Rotary, and the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education Community Wellness Committee among others.
