Teen Programs
In 1970, the South Mountain YMCA was created to fulfill a need in the Maplewood/South Orange communities for teen programming.  Our organization is committed to serving this population with programs designed by our youth, for our youth.  Special events will be held throughout the year after with the planning and implementation by our middle school population.

Baby sitting  training

American Red Cross BABYSITTING TRAINING (11 - 15 yrs)
This popular course gives the participants the knowledge, skill and confidence to care for infants and school-age children.  Training will consist of videos, activities and hand-on skill training and discussion.  This course teaches how to respond to emergencies, illnesses, first aid, rescue breathing, appropriate care of children, decision-making skills and child development.  Textbooks and lunch will be provided.  Each individual will receive an American Cross Certification Card  and an interactive CD-Rom upon successful completion.

w swooch YOUNG LEADERS CLUB (6th -8th grade)
Our YMCA facility will be open for local youth on Friday nights for lots of teen-run, adult-supervised activities in our Program Center and Gym.  The focus of this program will be to create an environment where teens can plan the activities they want, including trips and volunteer opportunities throughout the year.  Specific focus will be on the health and all around well-being of this population and all decisions will be made with this primary focus in mind.
1st & 3rd Friday of each month (Oct-May) 7:30pm – 9:00pm

Fee: $250 per school year, Oct - May

LEADERS CLUB (Grades 9-12)
These leaders will help implement and run programs for the middle school population on Friday nights along with special events and volunteering opportunities to help with college and job applications.  These leaders will learn valuable skills about organizing, leadership skills,
1st and 3rd Friday every month (October-May)  7:30 – 9:00pm
Location: Program Center
Fee: $125 per school year, October-May
  

YOUTH DODGEBALL LEAGUE (5th - 9th Grades)

Our YMCA follows the NADA (Nat’l Amateur Dodge ball Association) regulations.  NADA was created as a recreational pursuit for non-traditional sport enthusiasts to get fit while having fun in a non-threatening environment.  Teamwork and strategy are more valuable factors in Dodge ball than athletic skill and individual competitiveness.  Anyone can play!  Experience is countered by enthusiasm.
